VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES

Letter Writing to Representatives

Hi everyone! We have another volunteer opportunity, this time writing letters to your state and federal representatives! In the letter to your state representatives, Al Muratsuchi and Ben Allen, we have discussed several pieces of legislation regarding COVID-19’s effect on children that have been proposed in California. They include calling for stimulus checks for marginalized communities and advancing money toward COVID measures in school districts to reopen schools. There is also a letter detailing the need for fast, strong action for combat the pandemic as it impacts food insecurity and education for children in Los Angeles.

We recommend that you use the templates provided to handwrite your letter, or edit the template and print a final version. The template has placeholders for your information—including name, address, and date. All you need to do is take a photo of you dropping off your letter and submit it to this google form! There are mailing instructions on the second page of the document, as well as the addresses you need to mail the letter. This volunteer opportunity will last the length of the quarter. Click here for the first letter and here for the second letter!

Reading Partners

Reading Partners works with students who are six months or more behind in their reading skills. Their mission is to help children become lifelong readers by empowering communities to provide individualized instruction with measurable results. As a volunteer, you will be following a curriculum and will be trained to carry out tutoring sessions to help these students become confident readers. The fourth grade reading mark is essential, and the goal of Reading Partners is to ensure that every child can reach this level before moving on to fifth grade.

Hearts Over Hands

Hearts over Hands is a student volunteer-run organization that provides free, virtual childcare assistance to families looking for support. They pair university student volunteers, who serve as “Big Sibs,” with younger children to build lasting child-mentor relationships and to break the sense of social isolation that many are currently experiencing. Through weekly video calls with the families they are matched with, Big Sibs offer anything from fun companionship activities and general conversation to tutoring and homework help.

They have over 250 families from around the country signed up to receive support and are looking for more volunteers to join the team and brighten a child’s day!

Family Rescue Center

The Family Rescue Center in LA is in need of remote volunteers to assist with wellness check phone calls to seniors who regularly visit their clinic and food pantry. The objective is to reach out to these patients to assess their social determinants of health as well as an assessment of communication methods like SMS.

Volunteers can choose to participate in calling patients, join the resource team that researches open needs specific to each patient, or both! This program will be completely remote and have a low time commitment of 1-2 hours per week. Please note that calls can only be made from 12pm-3pm PST (3-6pm EST) on weekdays, so applicants must be available during that time to complete their calls (weekday preference is flexible and up to you).
